Match Report

Blyth Town were condemned to a 5-0 defeat against promotion-chasing rivals Shildon at Gateway Park.

Luke Spalding put the visitors ahead before Jon Weirs doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark.

Nathan Greenwood added a third, while Adam Lennox scored two goals inside the final four minutes of the first-half.

Despite having the wind on their backs in the second-half, Blyth couldn’t find a breakthrough.

Going into the game, Town were sitting second in the table, two points above Shildon, and started brightly with Adam Johnson testing the ‘keeper early.

With their first chance, the Railwaymen went ahead after a cross from the right was half cleared to the feet of Spalding, who struck home.

Liam Wotherspoon, Liam Henderson and Marcus Giles all tested Andrew Jennison in the Shildon goal as Blyth got a foothold in the game.

However, the visitors doubled their advantage against the run of play when Weirs shot found the far corner of the net.

Shildon closed out the half on top and a goal-of-the-season contender from Lennox, who then added a fifth off the underside of the bar saw them five goals to the good at half-time.

It was all a bit of a formality in the second-half, with Blyth trying to find a breakthrough of their own.

Chances of note were few and far between for most of the second period, with substitute Brandon Slater firing over a free-kick in stoppage time.

Blyth will look to put this result behind them as they travel to North Shields on Boxing Day.
